The name of the district derives from the 28 grain mills that once lined the coast. A picture of the original mill district can be seen today only in the photobook "Así era el Molinar" by Xavier Terrasa, as only two of the picturesque mills have survived the changing times. They can be found near the "Nassau Beach Club" and accommodate two trendy restaurants.

For several years, it has also been lined with trendy bars and restaurants. These fill up quickly, especially in the evening, when locals and sightseers enjoy the fresh sea breeze with a "caña" or a wine.

El Molinar starts behind the horseshoe-shaped beach bay of Portixol with one of Spain's oldest marinas. The "Club Marítimo de Levante" was founded in 1917 and has over 100 berths. To increase its capacity, a large-scale port expansion is planned, but is confronted with broad resistance. A Civic Platform could prevent the start of construction; the authorities consider the expansion plans "disproportionate". Now both parties are working on a compromise solution.
The locals want to preserve the atmosphere of the former fishing district as much as possible. As you wander through the narrow streets in the second and third line of the sea, you can still enjoy an authentic impression of the original El Molinar. Butcher Miguel Gual welcomes all his clients with their first names, and since 1973, has supplied the neighbourhood with fresh meat, vegetables and fruit from the farmers. And those who want to eat fish in a Majorcan ambience, are recommended to visit the family restaurant "Can Tito“ that has hosted guests for 37 years.
The charm of El Molinar is the harmonious coexistence between old-timers and newcomers, between traditional Mallorcan restaurants and stylish bars. And no matter where you feel most comfortable, you always have the sea roaring in the background.
