Arta

The castle walls of Artà

With its winding streets, narrow alleys and stone houses with closed green shutters, this town in the northeast of Mallorca, with its 6,000 inhabitants is the picture of an idyllic country town.

Winding streets and lovingly renovated properties

The farmers still bring their fruits from the field and picked fruits to the market on the weekend for you to purchase. Local craftsmen make woven baskets from palm branches, wreaths and shells, wooden toys and trinkets which draw attention in the shops and boutiques. Amateur painters show off their Majorcan landscapes in oil and colour. The foreigner who wanders casually into the village feels relaxed, especially in one of the lovely street cafés, sitting on a chair outside and sipping a "cortado", serenely watching the people go about their daily lifes.

The winding streets twist and turn around the village houses with partial lovingly renovated apartments and darkly clothed Majorcan women clean the streets. Here, visitors would feel transported back about 100 years in time, if it weren’t for cars crossing their path every now and then . Behind high walls, hidden from public gaze, and at the heart of the village are charming villas and palaces with park-like gardens, stone witnesses of Spanish nobility, who resided here. Nearby Real Estate Agents praise enchanting country houses and fincas.

Castle of Artà

In Arta the from the distance visible castle walls, battlements and towers over the city draw the attention of strangers, and arouse their curiosity. Climbing over 180 steps, tourists excitedly experience and understand the Passion of our Lord, which is marked by the stations of the cross, past the slender cypress trees that stand like green guards on the way, on the way to the top of the hill.

At the top, the visitors have to catch their breath when looking down at the valley. Below is the town of Arta with its mostly lime whitewashed walls and reddish brown tile roofs, surmounted by the fortified parish church with its massive square tower and the Gothic-arch windows. Then your eyes wander over the green of the trees with the brown of the fields sprinkled between. Also faintly visible is the white or yellow of villas and houses and the blue of swimming pools. In the distance the grey-blue of the Sierra de Llevant then breaks their gaze on the horizon.

After the rich view into the distance, the eye is attracted to the near surroundings, which now lead us back into the past of the Middle Ages. The castle on the hill is surrounded by a sturdy defensive wall of hewn stone, on which a few towers are perched. These remnants of the former castle date back to the 14th century. Here the Majorcan kings built a new castle on the remains of the destroyed Arab fortress .

The classical Sanctuary "San Salvador"

After the impressive tour of the dam, it is time to visit the classical Sanctuary "San Salvador" on top of the castle hill. The Church can probably presume of having the oldest statue of Mary on Majorca.

On the way back to the old town the parish church "Transfiguracion del Señor" which seems so powerful and defiant from above town, should be visited. The exterior looks are not deceptive. Again, it is a fortified church, where the help-seeking believers were able to escape from pirate raids. The Gothic church was built in the 13th century on the foundations of a ruined mosque.

Arts and Culture in Artà

Arta’s history goes back much further than the Middle Ages, this is shown in a short visit to the town museum. Bronze statues (ca. 1000 BC) from the Talayot times, small statues of gods from Roman times and ceramics from the Arab occupation testify to the long history of this place. The local arts and crafts tradition has great value in Arta. Everywhere jauntily decorated boutiques and craft shops attract passers by. In the information centre, a former railway station features sculptures and handcrafted items by local artists which are exhibited and exchanged. In the "Casal d'Arta", a beautifully located old town house, the rooms are furnished with antiques and provide a tasteful, cosy atmosphere. Even while enjoying Majorcan specialties, art is not forgotten in Arta. The intimate restaurant-bar Parisien offers art exhibitions and concerts in addition to tasteful gastronomy.

For sporting action there are nearby golf courses Capdepera and Canyamel, where golf enthusiasts can even buy a villa right by the golf course. And for those seek the sea after all the country, the lively Cala Ratjada with it's lighthouse and harbour is just ten minutes away. Numerous restaurants and bars invite you to dive into the night in the hustle and bustle until late.
